Fragile X syndrome is a genetic disorder in which a gene on the X chromosome is greatly elongated, which disrupts its normal function of promoting connections between neurons. Affected individuals typically display a degree of mental disability, hyperactivity and seizures. It is more common in men and men have more severe symptoms. Females have two X chromosomes of which only one is typically affected, hence the healthy X chromosome does some of the work of the faulty one in females
