Muslim Crowds Rally for FLN in Algiers as Paratroopers Move In to Quell Uprising
France - Circa 1960: On Saturday, December 10th, 1960, the Muslim population of the Casbah erupted in open defiance, waving the red, white, and green flag of the National Liberation Front (FLN). Thousands flooded into the French quarters of Algiers, chanting pro-FLN slogans and singing revolutionary songs. Though some set cars ablaze, the demonstration was primarily a bold declaration of support for the FLN and the Algerian Provisional Government (GPRA). As tensions escalated, elite French paratroopers were called in to restore control. (Footage by Roberto Machado Noa/Getty Images)
