The vegetation on the way to the top of Cerro Chirripó in Costa Rica changes dramatically with altitude, transitioning from dense tropical forests to high-altitude alpine tundra. As you climb from the trailhead (approx. 1,500 meters) to the summit (3,821 meters), you will pass through distinct ecosystems. Near the Base Crestones (3,392m) and toward the summit, the vegetation changes to páramo. This is characterized by hardy vegetation adapted to cold, high winds, and intense sun, including cushion plants, small shrubs, and bamboo-like grasses. The final ascent to the summit region is mostly barren, dominated by exposed rocks and scattered, low-lying, hardy plants.
