Glacier Partially Collapses After 'Abnormally High' Temperatures and Heavy Rainfall Hit Patagonia
High temperatures and heavy rainfall caused a glacier to partially collapse on September 9 in Queulat National Park, in the Patagonia region of Chile. The collapse was captured by Pablo Ignacio Sanhueza Lara, who was taking a group to visit the site. Sanhueza Lara told Storyful that he recorded the video at 1:52 pm, local time. "On the journey to the park, we heard some loud noises that seemed to come from the inside, so we went to check," he said. "I had never seen anything like that before." In the footage, the glacier can be heard rumbling before eventually breaking off, with a downpour of ice filling a valley. University of Santiago climate scientist Raul Cordero told https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/mountain-glacier-chiles-patagonia-collapses-amid-high-temperatures-2022-09-13/ Reuters that detachment between masses of ice were normal, but that the frequency of these events was troubling. "One of the consequences of global warming is that it is destabilizing several glaciers and in particular some unstable glacier walls," he said. Cordero added that a heat wave with "very abnormal" temperatures hit that area of Patagonia before the collapse. The video was originally uploaded to https://www.instagram.com/p/CiYwsKTjvDt/ Instagram with the caption: "We witnessed yet another sign of the retreat of glaciers and the effects of global warming. As the musician Jorge Drexler says in a song: 'Time that heals everything, also melts everything'." (Footage by Pablo Ignacio Sanhueza Lara/Storyful via Getty Images UGC)
