Colombian state offers long awaited apology and recognition for 'False Positives' tragedy
BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - OCTOBER 3: A historic moment unfolded during an event in the Colombian capital on Tuesday (Oct. 3) as mothers and other relatives of young people murdered by the Colombian army, so-called “false positives”, witnessed a significant act of recognition and public apology by the State.Led by the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, the event in Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá marked a significant moment in Colombia's history, shedding light on the gravity of the “False Positives” tragedy and the State's commitment to acknowledging and rectifying past injustices. It serves as a crucial step towards reconciliation and healing for the affected families and the nation as a whole. In Colombia, “False Positives” refers to the disturbing phenomenon where the military or police mistakenly label innocent civilians as guerrillas or criminals, leading to their illegal execution. This issue garnered international attention, and the administration of former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez (2002-2010) faced widespread criticism for alleged human rights violations, including the perpetuation of “False Positives.” However, in a historic turn of events, the Colombian government has now taken the initiative to acknowledge and rectify this grave problem, following the example of a specific case.6,402 civilians, whom the Army falsely passed off as enemy combatants, were killed by the military between 2002 and 2008, according to investigations carried out by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace which judges crimes that occurred in the context of the armed conflict. Most of the victims from the town of Soacha, a poor suburb to Bogota’s south, were young and low-income individuals, and they were promised jobs. However, they were discovered dead in Ocana. The military said they died and reported to be guerrillas or criminals that the army had killed.(Footage by Juan David Moreno Gallego/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
