Speaker Johnson says Cherfilus-McCormick may face expulsion after noncooperation while due process protects institution
House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana says at a weekly news conference that the Cherfilus-McCormick case is rare as the last member to reach the sentencing phase equivalent was Charlie Rangel in 2010 because members facing serious charges typically resign, but this individual chose not to cooperate and fought the Ethics Committee at every turn for over two years delaying the process, and he said the committee operates in good faith to protect the institution and the people who sent everyone there because due process protects against frivolous allegations as well as real ones, and expulsion may happen shortly.
