Speaker Ryan on Little Sisters Supreme Court Case

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin makes a rare speech from the well of the House to discuss a case before the Supreme Court the next day in which the conscience of religious organizations toys the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act to be heard the next day in Little Sisters of the Poor vs. Burwell, saying he stands in support of the Little Sisters, an order of Catholic nuns who serve the elderly poor in 31 countries. Ryan says that there is lots of talk a lot about public service but they live it, but that under the health care law, the department of health and human services is insisting on a regulation that requires the sisters to offer benefits that violate his religious beliefs, calling it just a fig leaf. Ryan says is it is clear to anyone with eyes to see that the regulation is a violation of the religious freedom and the restoration act, a bipartisan law where Congress said that the burden is not on faith to obey government mandates but rather on the government to respect faith, concluding that is the very meaning of religious freedom, one of the founding principles of the nation, which is why he and other members of Congress joined in a brief to the supreme court on behalf of the little sisters to get the relief they deserve.
