Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says in his first floor speech since announcing his retirement from Congress in 2026 that his grandmother, mother, and her two siblings immigrated to the United States from Lithuania in 1911, arriving on a ship from Germany to Baltimore before finding their way to East Saint Louis, Illinois, and though few things remained from that voyage, his grandmother brought a Lithuanian Catholic prayer book that was considered contraband in Czarist Russia, which he kept in his office as a reminder of her faith and his, before expressing that he joined people across the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis.
