Meroe Pyramids in Sudan persist through conflict, shedding light on ancient past

SHENDI, SUDAN - DECEMBER 28: In Sudan, the 2,000-year-old Meroë Pyramids stand resilient in the desert, enduring the ravages of time and turmoil.Footage captured by Anadolu on December 28, highlights these captivating structures, which continue to defy conflict-stricken East African country Sudan.Located near the town of Shendi, approximately 200 kilometers north of Sudan's capital, Khartoum, the Meroë Pyramids are a UNESCO World Heritage site that once attracted significant numbers of tourists before the ongoing unrest.The pyramids are also referred to as the "Bejrawiya Pyramids" due to the name of a nearby village.Designated as "Meroe Island Archaeological Sites" by UNESCO in June 2011, these pyramids are believed to have been constructed between the 8th century BC and the 4th century AD, during the height of the Kingdom of Kush.
