"Scorpion" Robot To Crawl Into Melted Fukushima Nuke Reactor
KANAGAWA, JAPAN – JUN. 30: A Japanese robot just like a scorpion with an LCD camera on its head and tail end each will in August crawl deep into the contaminated and devastated areas of a nuclear reactor believed to have melted down by a strong earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The machine is expected to be an ace in the hole in the difficult mission to map out ways to decommission ill-fated Fukushima Daiichi plant of the Tokyo Electric Power Co. The robot was developed by Tokyo-based International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) and Toshiba Corp.
