Have 2006 we said we had to renew ourselves, renew policies, culture, and organisation .... - On policy we were not proud enough of our record, not humble enough about our mistakes, not clear enough in our offer / We saved NHS for future generations, yet there wasn't a single question in any of prime ministerial debates about NHS, we lost focus on education and anti-social behaviour, seem to be late to the game when it came to issues of immigration, housing, welfare, had some good policies but didn't add up to coherent vision... - Should talk honestly about culture and organisation / This is an age of participation, openess, dialogue, debate... We talked about political reform, but we could not escape what seemed to be old politics.... - What was the conclusion? Our conversation with the public broke down ... we have to restart our conversation with the most precious asset each and every one of us has in this room, asset that our idealism makes us believe that the future can be better than the past ... that idealism is the lifeblood of our party, we don't think we can build heaven on earth, but we have a responsibility to try ...
