Interview with U.S. Senator Howard Baker

Linda Wertheimer asks U.S. Senator Howard Baker (R-TN): "You hold the office's leader of your party that your father-in-law held, and you came to the Senate a good long time ago, and were in the House before that, and observed Everett Dirksen work; camera pans up to a portrait of Sen. Everett Dirksen (R-IL) behind Sen. Baker. When you think about standing in his place, looking back at the people who served with him when he was at the height of his powers, what do you think about the difference between the Senate then and now?" Sen. Baker praises Senators of both parties, and he thinks it's a better Senate now. Wertheimer: "What do you think has happened in the political system between now and then that has had the most important factor in changing the Senate for you?" Baker quickly responds with "television" followed by the "jet airplane." TV has allowed Senators to speak on the floor for millions to watch, and has encouraged the youth to run for office.
