KYOTO,JAPAN-MARCH 02:March 2 gives a peek inside the new Imperial Hotel set to open March 5 in Kyoto's famed Gion district. The hotel is a conversion of a geisha performance hall, nationally registered as a tangible cultural property. Kyoto ordinances restrict the height of buildings in this area to 12 meters or less, but the hotel was granted an exception by preserving the southwestern exterior wall of the original structure. There are three buildings: the preserved main building (7 stories, 22 rooms), the main building (7 stories, 25 rooms), and the north building (2 stories, 8 rooms), with a total of 55 rooms.
