Marine biologist and freediver Sheree Marris had an up-close encounter with a baby seahorse off the coast of Victoria, footage shows. Marris told Storyful she was swimming off the Mornington Peninsula on Sunday, November 2, when she came across the creature. 'Clinging to a wisp of seagrass with its monkey-like tail, the delicate 'sea pony' looked like it was riding a broomstick using the floating vegetation as a leafy life raft to sail into new territory, where it will eventually settle on the seafloor,' Marris said. 'What makes this moment even more magical is the biology behind it. In the seahorse world, it's the dads who give birth. With a pouch like a kangaroo and a birthing style closer to a sneeze, the male releases dozens of babies that tumble into the ocean like tiny musical notes. 'The young fry or 'ponies' are entirely on their own from the moment they're born. It's rare to witness such a fresh arrival, let alone capture it in wild waters. It's proof that diving in Australia's cooler seas holds surprises every bit as spectacular as the tropics - you just have to know where (and how) to look.'
