Maryland Congressman Steny Hoyer says at a press conference on statehood for the District of Columbia a day before an admission bill was set to pass the House that Alaska and Hawaii were introduced into the union in the same year and almost everybody in Washington believed Alaska would be of Democrats and Hawaii of Republicans but the opposite were true, so the constitutional reformers, the Federalist Papers and anybody who thought states to be admitted on the basis of politics rather than the basic premise of their citizenship was un-American.
