Senator Alsobrooks says legislation allows whole milk in schools but lactose intolerance disability classification causes confusion and stigma

Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks says before the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act unanimously passed that specifically this legislation would allow schools to provide whole milk but also make it easier for parents to request that their child be provided with milk alternative if their child suffered from lactose intolerance, that they remained concerned about continued classification of lactose intolerance as disability and wanted to be clear this issue predated Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, noted classification of lactose intolerance as disability could cause confusion for parents who would not refer to their lactose intolerant child as having disability especially given high prevalence of lactose intolerance creating undue stigma.
