Mexican President Sheinbaum leads 'Cry of Independence' ceremony
EXICO CITY, MEXICO - SEPT. 15: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum led the 'Cry of Independence' ceremony, also known as 'El Grito', on Monday night, Sept. 15.Sheinbaum, the first woman in Mexico’s history to preside over the ceremony, honored indigenous women, migrants, and overlooked female heroes in her speech.“Long live Indigenous women, long live our migrant sisters and brothers, long live the dignity of the people of Mexico, long live freedom, long live equality, long live democracy, long live justice, long live a free, independent, and sovereign Mexico, long live Mexico,” she declared from the balcony of the National Palace. The Cry of Independence comes from the call made by priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla early on the morning of September 16, 1810, urging Mexicans to rise up against Spanish rule and fight for independence. The tradition of reenacting the Grito began with Mexico’s first independent governments, but it wasn’t until 1896 that it was officially held from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City for the first time.Since then, it has become a national tradition, performed every year by the President of the Republic.(Footage by Amaranta Atzin Marentes Orozco/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
