Moazzam Begg (Former Guantanamo Bay detainee) interview SOT
- I don't think it was as austere as people make out (Afghanistan)/ You don't know until you actually live there/ It's easy to judge from a distance/ It's easy to hate from a distance/ I think though in hindsight, when I look back at Afghanistan, there were rules that were austere, but they really weren't as bad as people have made them out to be - and my evidence for that is if you speak to some of the other people, who were not of a Muslim background that lived there, and I think they might give you similar story/ What I would say, yes, the Taliban rules, I think they were austere, they were strict, to their own detriment, but as far as my wife and my children were concerned they were free to go wherever they wanted
- There were several reasons why I left Birmingham and went to Afghanistan/ I believe myself to be British and Britain is my home/ I went to a country where people were a lot more impoverished/I tried to help people that were a little worse off than myself in whatever little way that I could, and perhaps stay away for a year, two years or so, with my family rather than be away from them, and then come back when we felt the time was right
