Leader of the ANC Nelson Mandela speaks to press about working in the quarry on Robben Island and a typical prison day.
Nelson Mandela re-visits Robben Island: Part Two; Part 1 of 3SOUTH AFRICA: Robben Island:EXTNelson Mandela (Leader of the ANC) speaking to press SOT- (On how good he is with a pick) Well I used to be good those days / I haven't used a pick for a long time now, but I think I would easily pick up the skills- (Whether the sacrifice was worthwhile) Well as I have said on previous occasions, I was not the only one on this island / there are many of my comrades who may have sacrificed far more than I did / some of them you remember never returned, they died on the island here / at least I have been able to come out and make some contribution, however humble, however modest to the national debate going on in the country today / I am not the only one who has sacrificed either in this or other countries / there are great figures who have gone through this experience and who came out feeling strong, more determined and more committed to democratic values / it is experiences of that nature that give us encouragement and to feel that however long we spend in jail, nevertheless it is a sacrifice worthwhile- (A typical prison day) We woke up at half past five / then we went to the bathroom, had breakfast / seven to half past seven, they'd bring us to the quarry, sometimes walking from the prison, other times on a truck / one of the problems they had, they didn't want us to conduct, to meet common law prisoners or political prisoners from other sections / there was a great deal of interest in prisoners in our section; because the more well known prisoners, they were in this section, the rest of the prisoners were keen to see them / other days they brought us by truck / we worked here with picks and spades / at first there was no break until 12 o clock when we adjourned to have lunch; our lunch consisted of powder mixed with yeast and sugar; if it is thick it's a very enjoyable drink, you got a weak mixture and it was tasteless / nevertheless we survived.
