SPEECH - Advocates For Elder Parole Rally In New York

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – AUGUST 12: (SPEECH) New York City Council Member Tiffany Caban speaks as formerly incarcerated women, local elected officials, and advocates for elder parole rally at City Hall to call on lawmakers to pass legislation to ease the release of the aging New York inmate population on August 12, 2022 in New York City. Today marks the 3rd anniversary of the in-prison death of Valerie (Val) Gaiter — the longest-serving woman in NY State prisons and died in DOCCS custody — who allegedly died of untreated cancer and was erroneously misdiagnosed with having acid reflux. Advocates call for the passage of the Elder Parole and Fair & Timely Parole bills, both of which parole advocates claim to have enough support to pass and call on legislative leaders to bring them to the floor for a vote. Older adult advocacy groups call on New York Governor Kathy Hochul to begin granting clemency to aging incarcerated individuals. NY State Senate Bill S15A (2021-2022 Legislative Session) “relates to parole eligibility for certain incarcerated persons age fifty-five.” — Per the event was organized by the not-for-profit organizations: Release Aging People in Prison/RAPP and New Hour for Women & Children.
