Universal Newsreel - reaction to reports of Soviet a-bomb, USA; 1949
Newsreel report on the American response to reports that the USSR has an atomic weapon as the story breaks in newspaper headlines. The Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky, also spelled Andrey Vyshinsky, arrives for the United Nations Assembly meeting at Flushing in New York and is approached by the press. Dean Acheson and Warren Austin of the USA and Ernest Bevin and Hector McNeil of Great Britain are also at the UN. In light of the news, tightened security regulations are put into force across all 'atom installations', including Hanford in Washington, where the site is protected by high fences and security staff carry out checks on vehicles entering the site. A sign reads 'US GOVERNMENT PROPERTY - No Trespassing' while an aeroplane is used to survey the site and block any unauthorised or suspicious vehicles. Ground guards carry out target practice and tank manoeuvres as part of security measures. USA; precise date unknown, possibly December. (Universal Newsreel_Episode 1949 – ABMA707K)
