'Farewell Sootie': Koala Badly Burned in Bushfire Loses Battle for Survival
A koala https://newswire.storyful.com/storylines/*/stories/227850?search_term=sootie badly burned in November's New South Wales Mid North Coast bushfires has lost its battle for survival. 'Sootie' the adult male was initially taken to Taree's https://newswire.storyful.com/storylines/*/stories/227783?search_term=sootie Koalas in Care in November with its paws, fur, nose and ears all burned. The animal was also suffering from shock. The marsupial was transferred to https://portstephenskoalas.com.au/ Port Stephens Koalas along with seven other burnt koalas because the care group had reached maximum capacity. The video, posted on December 2, shows Sootie at the koala hospital, eating gum leaves whilst wearing mittens. "Thank you to everyone who is kindly making (mittens) and sending them to us. After you put the burn cream on the mittens go over the top and stops the medication from being rubbed off and keeps it in contact with the burnt skin so it can do its job," Port Stephens Koalas posted. Sootie's carer Sue Swain told Storyful: "Sootie put up a brave fight but burns get worse as time goes on. He was suffering from radiant burns." Sootie was buried at the Port Stephens Koala hospital in mid-December with a native grevillea bush planted on his grave. (Footage By Port Stephens Koalas/Storyful via Getty Images)
