Cow gives birth to rare triplet calves in northwestern Turkiye

BOLU, TURKIYE - JANUARY 27: On a cold winter day, a cow delivered a surprise that quickly stunned her owners in Turkiye’s northwestern province of Bolu. The cow named “Ak Fatma” which belongs to the Ergas family in the Mengen district gave birth to twin calves twice before, delivering triplet calves. The calves were given the names “Fedime”, Halime”, and the boy’s name is “Ceyyar”.It is incredibly rare for a cow to give birth to triplets. It's only a 1 in 105,000 chance that it happens in the first place, and when it does, many of the babies end up dying. For the ones that do survive, it's not likely that the mom will accept and take care of all three as her own.District Agriculture and Forestry Manager Semih Tatli also visited the Ergas family on Thursday (Jan. 27) to check the health of the calves, and carry out the identification procedures.Tatli said the birth of triplet calves is rare in the district, adding that “In my 10-year career, this is the first time I've seen such thing. That's why we share the joy of our elder sister Neslihan.”Farmer Neslihan Ergas said, “Ak Fatma” has given birth five times so far, delivering nine calves.(Footage by Mengen District Directorate of Agriculture /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
