On the 10th anniversary of the repatration of Elian Gonzalez, Cuban President Raul Castro joined the young Cuban at a church service in his honor. Gonzalez was only five years old when, on November 25, 1999, the US Coast Guard found him alone in the water after his mother and 11 others drowned trying to reach Florida. He was adopted by an uncle in Miami, but in late June 2000, after a protracted diplomatic and legal battle, he was eventually returned to his father in Cuba.
