Only 35 Whales Alive After Mass Stranding on Tasmanian Beach
Only 35 whales remained alive on September 22, out of around 230 that were stranded on an Australian beach near Strahan, Tasmania, as rescuers raced to save as many of the marine mammals as they could. Hundreds of pilot whales became stranded on Wednesday, September 21, https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-09-26/strahan-locals-absorbing-reality-of-mass-whale-stranding/12704154 two years since one of Australia's worst recorded whale strandings, in the same harbour. In a press conference shared with Storyful, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service incident controller Brendon Clark said several whales died overnight, leaving just 35 still alive on Thursday morning. "We are primarily focused this morning on really getting into that rescue operation and getting them released," Clark said. "We are conscious that some of them may re-beach themselves, and so we'll be monitoring that." Kris Carlyon, from the Marine Conservation Program at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania said, "in terms of whether we expect to lose further animals today, I think it's inevitable that we may lose a few more." "These animals have been stranded now for over 24 hours, they are in a really highly exposed, stressful location," (Footage by Sam Gerrity/Storyful via Getty Images UGC)
