Senegalese people mark Ashura Day with traditional ceremonies

DAKAR, SENEGAL - JULY 5: People in Senegal marked Ashura day with traditional and religious ceremonies on Saturday (July 5).Known as “Tamkharit” in the local Wolof language, Ashura Day is considered one of the most important religious celebrations in the country after Eid al-Adha.Senegalese, who observe this special day by fasting, break their fast with milk, water, and bread, then adorn their tables with “thiere,” a traditional grain dish.After evening prayer, children wear white makeup on their faces and heads then go from door to door to collect candies and sweets.The 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram, also known as Ashura, marks the anniversary of the passing of Mohammad’s grandson Hussein in the desert plains of Karbala, some 113 kilometers (70 miles) from the modern-day capital Baghdad.Al-Hussein, along with 72 loyal companions, was killed in the infamous Battle of Karbala in year 61 of the Islamic calendar by the forces of Umayyad Caliph Yazid I on the 10th day of Muharram.
