Brazil's favela residents left homeless after houses destructed
RIO DE JANERIO, BRAZIL - JULY 2020: People living in Brazil's favelas (shanty-towns) became homeless after the destruction of their houses.
Residents making their living by collecting recyclable garbages are struggling to survive in makeshift barracks after destruction in Rio de Janeiro city.
"I tried to set up my house here in the Favela, but the City Hall did not [provide anything], now I have to [leave] everything, despite the area is abandoned the City Hall does not want to authorize the construction of the houses. Now my husband and I have nowhere to go," one of the residents of Fevaka Carla Mendes said.
"My house is here, but now we had to destroy ... everything. We have nowhere to go. We have no home to live in, and no power to fight with the system," another resident Jose Mauricio said.
Along with the destruction of their homes residents, living among rats, are also fighting with coronavirus, tuberculosis, syphilis, and leptospirosis.
As drug traffickers imposed a coronavirus curfew people are only allowed to enter the area to buy drugs.
In the area, more than 85 people died due to coronavirus.
The total count of coronavirus-related deaths rose to 80,120 in the country. (Footage by Fabio Teixeira/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
