Bathers Run to Shore as Tiger Shark Appears at Perth Beach

Perth beachgoers have had their fun interrupted several times of late, local news reports https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/sharks/shark-sightings-force-closure-of-whitford-beach-for-second-day--c-5168621 said, amid several shark sightings. Video here, taken at Whitfords Beach in the city's northern suburbs, shows the water emptying as a tiger shark is spotted. The beach was partially https://twitter.com/SLSWA/status/1477517211874906113 closed on January 2 after multiple shark sightings, and https://twitter.com/SLSWA/status/1477857400036098053 again on January 3. "I was in the area for brunch and noticed the shark activity on SharkSmart, so I drove to Whitfords Beach and put the drone up and almost immediately spotted the 2.5-meter tiger shark not far from shore," said Liam Baster, who recorded the drone footage on January 2. He said he called the water police while filming to report the shark's presence. "I asked them to act swiftly as my concern for beachgoers and pets was priority," he said, later adding, "At this time of year there are multiple sightings daily along the metro coast and in the southwest as the government uses helicopters to notify beachgoers of shark activity in the area through the SharkSmart app." (Footage by Liam Baster/Storyful via Getty Images UGC)
