Menindee Lakes In Australian Desert Fill With Water Following Years Of Drought

MENINDEE, AUSTRALIA - MAY 17: A Pied Cormorant fishes at the Menindee Lakes main weir on May 17, 2021 in Menindee, Australia. The Menindee Lakes are a system of nine large, shallow lakes in far-western New South Wales. The region has been crippled by the recent drought, which broke earlier in 2021. In 2018/19, more than a million fish including Murray cod, Golden Perch and Bony bream died in three Menindee fish kills. The recent water flow along the Darling-Baaka River system in northern New South Wales has now made it to the Menindee Lakes and for the first time since 2016 there has been enough water to open the gates between Lake Pamamaroo and Lake Menindee.
