Portugal President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portuguese Parliament José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and members of the ministers cabinet join MPs to sing the National Anthem during the Portuguese Parliament Solemn Session to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mario Soares on December 06, 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal. Mario Soares, the first secretary-general of the Socialist Party, from its foundation in 1973 to 1986, served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1985, and subsequently as the 17th Portuguese President from 1986 to 1996. The celebrations for the centenary of Mario Soares' birth, which began on November 21 with the presentation of the commemorative program, will continue for a year and in addition to a solemn session, there will be numerous cultural initiatives throughout the country and a program specifically dedicated to the younger generations.
