Flamingos and rare duck species find sanctuary at Akkaya reservoir in central Türkiye
NIGDE, TÜRKİYE - JULY 30: A reservoir in central Türkiye, has emerged as a significant habitat for avian biodiversity, hosting 225 out of the 500 bird species. The Akkaya reservoir situated near Nigde Omer Halisdemir University in Nigde province is a vital ecological asset, supporting nearly half of the country's bird species.Recent enhancements to the area's environmental management, including the establishment of an Advanced Biological Treatment Facility by Nigde Municipality, have led to a notable increase in bird activity.Akkaya is particularly noteworthy for accommodating several duck species that are listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.Among these are the long-tailed, apple-headed, and tufted ducks. In addition to these rare species, the lake is also a favored stopover for flamingos, further underscoring its importance as a key wildlife sanctuary.(Footage by Ali İhsan Öztürk/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
