ITN Reporting 66: South Africa: New Prime Minister elected

ITN Reporting 66: South Africa: New Prime Minister elected; Cape Town:Election Banner of Helen Suzman (Opposition politician)Helen Suzman (Opposition politician) interview SOT- I think Vorster will attempt to maintain the image of strength & infelxibility that the former Prime Minister managed to portray / I think he's a completely dedicated nationalist & his idea of developing the country is according to the plan laid down by the Prime Minister, of complete white domination in so-called white South Africa and the quid pro quo of rights for Africans in their own areas, the Bantustan policy in other words / He's a very hard-working man, I wouldn't say he's full of humour / He has run his own portfolio fairly capably / I don't approve of his policies- In fact though we are a multi-racial South Africa no matter what devious methods politicians employ to try and unscramble this egg- I don't think that's going to come for a long time [equal rights for black and white South Africans] indeed African political development at the moment is probably at its lowest ebb / We had a spate of African political movements over the 50s but gradually they have disappeared from the scene as political measures have been brought into action against them / Today there are very few African leaders who would demand equal rights within South Africa
