Spain takes strides in combatting stray animal crisis
MADRID, SPAIN - SEPTEMBER 10: Spain, facing one of Europe's highest numbers of abandoned dogs, has made significant progress in tackling the problem of stray animals through a comprehensive strategy that includes shelters, mandatory neutering, microchipping, education, and legislative measures. Anadolu’s (AA) recent report, titled "Stray Animals in Europe" delves into the exemplary practices and legal regulations in Spain, providing valuable insights for addressing this persistent challenge worldwide. Despite the staggering annual abandonment of over 200,000 dogs, along with countless cats, Spain stands out with its remarkably low population of stray dogs on the streets. This achievement is attributed to the rising societal awareness regarding animal rights and the responsibilities of pet owners. This awareness has spurred swift political and legal actions, coupled with increased financial resources dedicated to animal welfare. The responsibility for caring for street dogs and cats primarily falls on autonomous communities and municipalities in the country. This task is carried out by a dedicated team of professionals, often supported by volunteers. Fernando Sánchez Ocana, the head of the Salvando Peludos Association and the Arroyomolinos Animal Protection Center coordinator, asserted that the key to addressing the stray animal issue lies in "neutering and socialization." According to 2022 data, approximately 360,000 animals, of which nearly 250,000 are dogs, are abandoned and left to fend for themselves on the streets in Spain. These abandoned dogs, typically employed for hunting, guarding, or illegal breeding, have posed a significant challenge. Ocana emphasized that it is mandatory in Spain for dogs and cats to be microchipped and for animals not bred legally to be neutered. (Footage by Jaime Alekos/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
