The Armored or spiny trapdoor spider (Idiopidae) is being found under a mat in a house in the evening in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on September 3, 2025. The Trapdoor Spider is being named for its unique ability to construct trapdoors to ambush prey from beneath. These spiders are building tubular nests in which they are living, and these nests are featuring beautiful circular lids. As expert hunters, Trapdoor Spiders are preying on frogs, lizards, mice, small birds, and insects. They are having large bodies similar to those of tarantulas. Male Trapdoor Spiders are typically having spurs on their legs that are helping immobilize females during mating.
