BERLIN, GERMANY - MAY 23, 2024: The building of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Humboldt University, where students were demonstrating in support of Palestine, was evacuated by police on Thursday (May 23) in Berlin, the capital of Germany.Students who started the protest in support of Palestine Wednesday at the Faculty of Social Sciences near Friedrichstraße railway station in the Mitte district, met today with faculty members, including Humboldt University President Julia von Blumenthal, in the building.The students negotiated with the university administration to extend the duration of the protest.After the allotted time for the protest had expired, some students voluntarily left the building in groups and were taken to the police checkpoint for identification. However, many students continued the protest inside the building.The police entered the building, removed the banners, and took the students outside one by one, detaining them. It was observed that some students were handcuffed.In a statement to journalists, Blumenthal expressed great regret over the failure to reach an agreement with the students, indicating that she had the impression that a good step had been taken through the dialogue with the students.Blumenthal stated that no criminal charges would be filed against the students for the protest as it was tolerated.Meanwhile, a large number of students gathered near the building to support the protest, chanting slogans.There were occasional clashes between the police and demonstrators, and some students were detained.On Wednesday (May 22), students began their protest at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Humboldt University and hung a banner reading "Free Palestine" on the building's exterior.After meeting with the students, Blumenthal announced that Humboldt University would tolerate the protest until 6:00 PM today (Thursday).(Writing by Berkay Gur - Footage by Erbil Başay/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
