Kyoto's Historic Byodoin Temple hall Puts on Light Show For 1st Time

The famed 1,000-year-old Hoo-do, or Phoenix Hall, of Byodoin temple here will be lit up for the first time from Nov. 18 as part of a special limited night visit event.The Phoenix Hall, originally constructed in 1053, completed a major renovation three years ago.However, the temple, a World Heritage site, has never been open to the public at night for visits.A special preview event for local residents and special guests was held Nov. 17. Lighting on the temple buildings alternated every five minutes, casting the complex--widely regarded as one of Japan's most beautiful structures--in a rich glow.
