Arctic Ocean: North Pole route of Turkish scientists

SVALBARD, ARCTIC - JULY 20: The National Arctic Scientific Research Expedition was organized for the 4th time between June 26 and July 25 this year, under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic and the Ministry of Industry and Technology and under the coordination of TUBITAK Marmara Research Center Polar Research Institute.Türkiye's National Arctic Scientific Research Expedition Team returned home (July 25) after completing 16 different projects with samples from 51 different sampling points.During the expedition, which scientists completed by travelling about 4,000 kilometers, they observed sea ice starting at 81 degrees north latitude, the glaciers affected by climate change around the Svalbard archipelago and its surroundings, and the habitats of Arctic creatures changing accordingly.Aiming to provide clear data on the rapid consequences of global climate change, the scientists visited 51 different sampling points in the Barents Sea on their route from Türkiye to the north in the Arctic Ocean. They completed their scientific research with 16 different projects on zooplankton and phytoplankton sampling, determination of pollutants in the sea, monitoring of seawater physical parameters, determination of microplastics, atmospheric pollution observations, environmental impacts of ship trade routes, observation of sea ice and monitoring of marine mammals. The Arctic Region, which contains one-third of the world's hydrocarbon reserves and covers an area of 20 million square kilometers along with the Arctic Ocean, is also home to many living creatures. In addition to polar bears, the symbol of the Arctic, walrus, ringed seal, beluga, humpback whale, arctic fox, deer and many bird species can be observed in this region.(Footage by Sebnem Coskun/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
