Tumaco leads way in sustainable palm oil production in Colombia

TUMACO, COLOMBIA - AUGUST 13: The palm oil trees were planted on Tuesday (August 13) in Tumaco, located in the Narino region of Colombia, the world's fourth largest producer of palm oil.As the leading region for palm oil production in the country, Tumaco is actively working to ensure sustainable production.Many palm oil producers are developing environmentally friendly practices while working to prevent damage from pests such as leaf rust and other diseases.The development of palm oil crops allows them to coexist with other crops and promotes sustainable water management.This diversified approach to agriculture not only helps to conserve local biodiversity, but also provides farmers with additional sources of income and food security.Research centres such as Cenipalma (Oil Palm Research Center Corporation) have made significant efforts to find sustainable ways to reduce the impact of pests and address the potential impacts of these crops.Their research focuses on the development of disease-resistant varieties, more efficient farming practices and biological pest control methods.
