Chilean communities fight against industrial pollution in 'Chilean Chernobyl

VALPARAISO, CHILE - JUNE 2: The small communities of Quintero and Puchuncaví, located 180 kilometers from Santiago, Chile, are struggling against severe contamination in their local bay, which has gained the ominous nickname of "the Chilean Chernobyl."Approximately 50,000 inhabitants live in the shadow of twenty high-polluting thermal, oil, and chemical plants concentrated along this Pacific bay, recognized as the epicenter of industrial pollution in Latin America. The residents breathe in an estimated 100 toxic gases produced by coal-fired power plants and copper and oil refineries. As a consequence, the community has seen a significant increase in cases of cancer and other health-related problems. The pollution has become so severe that schools have been forced to suspend classes due to toxic episodes, with some children even hospitalized for poisoning. The community is now demanding a decrease in sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. They are calling for a pollution control program that would halt industrial activity when emissions surpass acceptable levels. This week, local schools were compelled to close due to an increase in the toxicity levels.Daniela Chavez, Director of the Republic of France school, expressed the community's frustration at the situation. She described the growing health, educational, and economic impacts caused by the contamination. Chavez detailed the constant interruptions to schooling caused by the toxic air, and the toll it is taking on teachers and students alike. This harrowing situation underlines the need for urgent action and stringent regulation to prevent further environmental damage and protect the health of the Quintero and Puchuncaví residents.(Footage by Lucas Aguayo Araos /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
