Historic Saint Hilarion Monastery partially destroyed in Gaza strikes

GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - FEB. 1: The Tel Umm Amer archaeological site, home to the 1,600-year-old Saint Hilarion Monastery, has been partially destroyed following what local officials described as deliberate Israeli bombardments. The site, located in central Gaza, is now at risk of being completely erased.The monastery complex is considered one of the most significant archaeological landmarks in the region. Recent strikes on its surroundings have damaged historic columns and key structural foundations of the ancient settlement, which has stood for over 16 centuries.Mohammed Shaheen Abduljawwad, the field supervisor for the site noted that preservation work has come to a complete halt and that the site is now overgrown with weeds.The damage to Tel Umm Amer follows the destruction of several other prominent Gaza landmarks, including the Pasha’s Palace, the Great Omari Mosque, and the Es-Samara Bathhouse.
