Two rare lakes in UNESCO geopark at risk due to drought in Catalonia, Spain

ISONA I CONCA DELLÀ, LLEIDA, SPAIN - RECENT, FEB. 2024: The two Basturs Lakes (Lleida), almost unique in the world for their geological features, are drying up due to the lack of rainfall affecting Catalonia region of Spain and the southern part of the European continent.The Great Lake is 100,000 years old, and the Small Lake is 20,000 years old. They are part of the ‘Mont de Conques’ complex, with a hill around 500,000 years old.The entire area is included in the UNESCO Global Geopark 'Orígens.'The scientific coordinator of the Geopark, Xavier Mir Pellicer, explained to Anadolu that these lakes are "like water volcanoes": formations associated with underground waters loaded with calcium carbonate.
