75-Foot Boat Startles Surfing Fans After Large Waves Disrupt Its Course

The US Coast Guard (USCG) https://www.news.uscg.mil/Press-Releases/Article/4270750/coast-guard-monitors-aground-passenger-vessel-in-honolulu/ asked beachgoers and boaters to 'keep a safe distance' from a 75-foot passenger vessel, after dramatic footage showed the boat hitting waves near surfers in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 9. The shocking moment was recorded by Wyatt Yee at Point Panic and shows the vessel, named Discovery, giving local surfers serious competition. Yee told Storyful that regulars gathered at the overlook to watch surfers hit the 'biggest swell of the season.' 'These sets started to roll in, bodysurfers were scoring, and all of a sudden we see this big boat come charging in through the channel,' Yee said. 'No sign of stopping, and for a moment we all thought the boat was going to flip over.' The USCG said that they received a report at 8:25 am on Saturday that the Discovery had run aground 'approximately 60 feet outside Kewalo Basin Harbor' while the vessel's captain and one crew member were aboard. 'Watchstanders directed the launch of a 45-foot response boat-medium from Station Honolulu, but due to shallow water depth and sea state, the boat crew was unable to reach the Discovery. Honolulu Ocean Safety Department jet ski crews arrived and confirmed that the two people aboard were uninjured,' they said. The Discovery's operator reported that two large waves had disrupted his course and that he lost propulsion once the vessel went aground. There were reportedly no mechanical failures prior to the vessel running aground, the USCG said. The vessel was secured to the seawall at Kewalo Basin awaiting commercial salvage.
