International water day without water in Mexico
ZUMPANGO LAGOON, MEXICO - MARCH 21: The Zumpango lagoon, located in the State of Mexico, which for decades was an important regulatory vessel for the recharge of the aquifers in the northeast of the Mexican territory and which had a great variety of biodiversity (fish and birds), is completely dry. This lagoon, with an area of 1,855 hectares, once stored more than 100 million cubic meters of water. Now, it remains without a drop of water.Mexico is currently grappling with a severe drought issue across its territory. The distribution of water has been particularly hard-hit in recent months. In Mexico City, an increasing number of residents are voicing complaints about the water scarcity in the country. It is anticipated that by the middle of this year, many of the aquifers that supply water to the capital will become depleted.Lauro RodrÃguez, a merchant and resident of the area, expressed, "It impacts all of us merchants, unquestionably affects us all, and it is not just about its impact on us as merchants but as human beings. If this lagoon, one of the 5 vital water sources, dries up in 5 years, we will face water shortages.""We, as tenants or inhabitants of this town, hold onto hope that one day the Lagoon will be filled again, as it was what drew so many people here. It brings back memories of my childhood, a cherished recollection of what the lagoon used to be. However, it is disheartening to reminisce when I recall its current state," said Marco Antonio Vicenteño, a merchant and resident of the area.AgustÃn Vicenteño, another merchant and resident of the area, commented, "Everything is completely dry now. They say they are planning to add water this year. I don't know, that's what the authorities say, but who knows?" (Footage by Amaranta Atzin Marentes Orozco/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
