The group discovered methane bubbles underneath the ice while on their skating tour.The bubbles, a result of decaying organic matter in the soil, were punctured and lit on fire by the skaters, creating a fascinating display of burning gas. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and its presence in the Arctic is particularly concerning as it has a much greater warming effect than carbon dioxide.However, these methane releases are not uncommon in the Arctic and have been observed for centuries. They serve as a reminder of the unique and constantly changing environment in the far North. The experience was captured on video and shared on social media, providing a window into this captivating natural event
