Argentinians protest for pay rises and better social assistance
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - OCTOBER 14: Thousands in Buenos Aires have gathered on Wednesday, Oct. 14, demanding rise for minimum wages and more social assistance from the state.
Gathering upon the call from various institutions including trade unions and NGOs, the protesters marched through the streets and chanted slogans.
The country had one of the longest COVID-19 quarantines in the world, which some Argentinians have called “quareternal” - the eternal quarantine.
It started on March 20, but since then, the government has been forced to loosen restrictions to help revive a suffering economy and relieve high poverty levels and record unemployment rates.
The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Argentina reached 894,296 with the nationwide death toll reaching 23,868. At least 721,380 people have so far recovered from the virus. (Footage by /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
