Iraq’s ancient city of Nimrud sees restoration efforts after ISIS destruction

MOSUL, IRAQ - JAN. 31, 2025: Thousands of historical artifacts have been recovered during restoration efforts in the ancient city of Nimrud, which suffered extensive damage during the occupation of Mosul by the Islamic State (ISIS).The restoration project, launched in 2019, aims to preserve the city's rich heritage.Founded between 1350 and 610 BCE, Nimrud spans 360 hectares and is located 30 km south of Mosul in Iraq’s Nineveh province.The site, once the capital of the Assyrian Empire, is home to royal tombs and iconic structures, including the winged lion figures that symbolize the grandeur of ancient Assyrian civilization.(Footage by Ismael Adnan Yaqoob /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
