Tim Conway: There’s supposedly three beats in comedy. Well if you go to four it throws it off. But if you go to 8, 9, & 10 people start going, “What is he doing?” And that’s where I found that it would always get Harvey. Carol was very tough to get a hold of, but Harvey, all you had to do was look at him and look at him for a long time. In the dentist sketch that we were doing where I paralyzed myself with Novocaine, he said, “This sketch stinks, they’re not even going to use it, I don’t know why we’re doing it.” Because I had not done the Novocaine part yet, and I said, “Well I have a little thing at the end with Novocaine.” He said, “That’s not gonna help.” So we come to the thing with Novocaine and of course he...went south and never stopped laughing. And with Lyle, I’m a German officer interrogating him and I can’t get anything out of him so I say, “I’m going to call the big guy on you.” And I reach in and the prop man had made me a little Hitler so I pull it out and go, “Let’s see you talk to him.” And I pull out a pencil and say, “He’s going to hit you with that stick. Those things, they just came and were gold.
