A titan triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) feeds directly on hard coral as checkerboard wrasse (Halichoeres hortulanus) and an emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) compete for the material it exposes, a concentrated display of reef species interdependence on a single feeding site. The triggerfish's teeth are fused into a beak strong enough to bite through calcified coral, a physical adaptation that makes it the only species at this reef station capable of initiating the feed.
