Parliament in Turkey defied the Turkish Armed Forces by rejecting army chief Faruk Gurler for president and, after 14 ballots, electing retired admiral Fahri Koruturk; trials of Marxist militants trained abroad followed the 1971 crackdown, martial law was lifted, and reforms the military had pressed were enacted while Suleyman Demirel reemerged as a shrewd civilian power broker; the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk endures as democracy survives its severest test, but the challenge remains to spread the prosperity of Ankara and Istanbul to a traditional countryside, where an opium ban pairs with land reform and rural education to move farms from camels to tractors.
