Knidos ancient city welcomes back visitors as lockdown eased in Turkey
MUGLA, TURKEY - JUNE 24: Turkey’s ancient city of Knidos in Datca district of Mugla started to welcome its visitors again within the gradual normalization process.Ertekin Doksanalti, the director of the ancient site said the excavation and restoration works continue in the ancient Greek city which was the "culture and art center of the ancient period".Doksanalti said, "Last year, despite the epidemic, Knidos hosted approximately 65,000 domestic and foreign visitors."Stating that the ancient city is located at the crossing point of the Aegean and the Mediterranean, he said, "Knidos is one of the cities that became rich in a short time by using this location and used this wealth for art and culture. Both archaeological excavations and historical sources prove that there was a settlement in Knidos since the 2nd millennium BC.""The city got famous especially as a culture and science center in ancient times, and it became a geography where doctors who were known in the ancient world were trained, especially what we call the 'Knidos School of Medicine',” he added.Dating back to 13th century BC, Knidos or Cnidus has magnificent structures, a port street lined with columns, an agora, two ancient theaters and two ports.It is famous for its statues of Dionysus, Athena and Aphrodite, and it is one of the biggest ancient cities in the southern Turkey.The 2,600-year-old city that is rumored to have witnessed the lives of many ancient Greek artists and scientists such as Eudoxus, Euryphon and Polygnotos including Sostratos, the architect of the Lighthouse of Alexandria draws attention with its centenary magnificence.On June 1, the country eased some measures following a 17-day strict lockdown. According to the latest government figures, Turkey's overall case tally is now over 5.38 million, while the nationwide death toll is at 49,358.
